June 2003 Highlights

The Changing Jewish Family

 Yavilah McCoy:
The Changing Face of Jewish Identity: Inside, Outside, and Other: Through my work in the field of "Jewish diversity" I use the traditionally Jewish form of asking questions and facilitating introspection to explore the changing face and changing times of our community--especially the evolution of "otherness" around color.

 Angela Buchdahl:
Kimchee on the Seder Plate After a painful summer of feeling marginalized and invisible I called my mother to declare that I no longer wanted to be a Jew. I did not look Jewish, I did not carry a Jewish name, and I no longer wanted the heavy burden of having to explain and prove myself every time I entered a new Jewish community. She simply respnoded by saying, "Is that possible?"

Lisa Freund Rosenblatt and Deborah Hirsch Mayer:
The Search for Vibrant and Affordable Jewish Life in America The cost of Jewish living may make moderate and low income households feel that Judaism is neither affordable nor welcoming to families.

 Vanessa Ochs:
The Torah of Love

If this body of literature has an impact, Jews will become more adept at using the language of Jewish wisdom to discern matters of the heart.

 Judith Kahn:
Single Motherhood and Community

I am a single mother by choice, a Jewish woman who in her late thirties decided that motherhood was a necessity, with or without a partner... When I chose to start my family, it felt like just another step on the ladder of life cycle events that are ritualized in our tradition.

 Barbara Diamond Goldin:
Reimagining a Family Reading Tradition

Why doesn't a Jewish organization sponsor a contest for Jewish children's stories that reflect contemporary Jewish life?

For Sale: Living Words V: A Source Book on Israel in a Time of Struggle

A timely resource for rabbis, educators, and families to address the crisis in Israel. Included are High Holiday sermons, new rituals for celebrating Israel's Independence Day, Responsa on the Prayer for the Peace of Israel, essays and resource materials to teach Israel in synagogues and schools.:

How can we make Jewish life for families more affordable?

Quote of
the Month

"What does it mean to be a 'normal' Jewish family today? As we learn each others' stories we hear the challenges and joys of reconciling our sometimes competing identities...We were a mixed multitude in ancient times and we still are. May we continue to see the many faces of Israel as a gift that enriches our people." Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl
